Map of Hadrian's Wall
Built by the Romans around 122 AD, Hadrian’s Wall marked the northern frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain. Stretching roughly 73 miles (117 km) across what is now northern England, it served both as a defensive fortification and a symbol of imperial power. Along its length were forts, milecastles, and watchtowers, housing troops and controlling movement across the border. Today, it remains one of the most iconic Roman structures in the UK and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
