Games of chance—sports betting, prediction markets, or stock trading—are extremely fun and addictive, and are a perennial human vice. We have normalized them the exact same way we normalized substance abuse, by first intellectualizing and legitimizing them for the upper classes.

Still blows my mind how normalized gambling has become at all class levels
Nobody seems to particularly support this new equilibrium where we allow everyone to partake in "industry worst practices" of all kinds of well-known vices, but ideologically and morally nobody can make paternalistic or inegalitarian arguments anymore so it will just continue.
Also, frankly, at this point even the upper classes have developed a highly skewed perception of their own vulnerability to vice and not in a positive direction. But they can by definition always afford such personal failings.
