Staking ETPs will soon be allowed in the US. Here are 5 thoughts around adding staking to Ethereum ETPs for my American friends (from someone who’s been running staking ETPs in Europe for years): 1. Right now in the US, only direct investors in the ETH token can opt to stake their ETH and earn additional returns. ETH ETFs provide only delta 1 exposure but will level-up once staking is approved and, for the first time, be on par with direct holders in maximising ETH returns. 2. In sales discussions, investors really respond well to the idea of earning more yield with hardly any additional risk, especially when the ETP compounds the staking rewards, folding it back into the NAV to boost total return. 3. Investors definitely prefer staked ETPs that are measured against an index or reference rate. Transparency is also key on staking percentages and reward splits. 4. Surprisingly, ETH Staking ETPs are not for everyone with some investors preferring to stick to the non-staked ETP. Why? In Germany, its because of local tax efficiency but some investors simply can't get their head around staking or don't like the sound of slashing. 5. Quant desks definitely prefer the staked ETP for the long leg of the basis trade as, of course, it boosts overall returns.
